Dr. David Lefler is dual board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Nephrology.


After graduating from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM), Dr. Lefler began his training with a traditional one year rotating internship followed by a three year categorical internal medicine residency.

Dr. Lefler found kidney patients to be medically challenging, and decided to then pursue specialized training in nephrology and hypertension. He completed a nephrology fellowship at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). After he completed his fellowship training Dr. Lefler remained at MUSC where he served as clinical faculty active in both clinical and basic science research. He then transitioned to private practice in 2003.

Dr. Lefler enjoys all aspects of nephrology including hemodialysis vascular access procedures and interventions to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease. He has been active in the construction of outpatient dialysis clinics, vascular access centers and has also served as medical director for several dialysis units. Nephrology & Hypertension Associates of Alaska is an independent nephrology practice in Alaska.

As a nephrology provider, Dr. Lefler is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and the American Society of Nephrology (FASN). He is also certified by the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology (ASDIN).

Dr. Lefler is originally from Virginia. He and his family moved to Alaska in 2011. They enjoy the many outdoor activities in Alaska.
